This giant novelty carrot is hilarious.

For our quarterly volunteering event, Human Element helped out another local non-profit organization called Food Gatherers. Food Gatherers serves over 150 non-profit agencies and programs that provide meals, snacks, or emergency groceries to low-income adults, children, and families in Washtenaw County. They distribute over 100,000 meals annually to those in need, and are one of the few food rescue organizations in Michigan.

Erik, Andrea, Nate, and I braved the “Green Room,” where all of the produce-sorting (a.k.a. magic) happens. On this particular day, we were tasked with sorting through the recently rescued vegetables, fruits, and various prepared meals from local groceries and restaurants. Once we had sifted through the mega pile of food and divvied it up into banana boxes, we tidied up our mess. The banana boxes of food are going to be shipped out on 5/8 and 5/9 to families that need them.

For our next volunteering event, we plan on helping out the Huron Valley chapter of Habitat for Humanity, an organization that has been providing newly renovated and affordable homes for families in the area.
